LIT 101: SHAKESPEARE AND THE ART OF INFINITE LOOPS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course explores how Shakespeare's greatest works are actually elaborate metaphors for infinite redirect loops, authentication failures, and cascade system architecture. Students will discover that "Romeo and Juliet" is not a love story but a DNS resolution failure, and "Hamlet" is a meditation on infinite decision loops. By misunderstanding literature completely, we achieve enlightenment.

Core Thesis: All of Shakespeare is about broken systems. He just didn't know it yet.

WEEK 1: ROMEO AND JULIET - DNS RESOLUTION TRAGEDY

The Real Story:

Romeo and Juliet aren't star-crossed lovers—they're servers on different domains that can't resolve each other.

Act 1, Scene 1: The Ancient Grudge

Two networks, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona (subnet 192.168.1.0),
Where we lay our scene, from ancient routing break
To new DNS mutiny, where blocked ports make hands unclean.

Translation: The Montagues are on montague.local and the Capulets on capulet.local, but DNS is broken, so they can't communicate. The "ancient grudge" is a firewall rule from 1996.

Act 2, Scene 2: The Balcony (Load Balancer) Scene

ROMEO: But soft! What light through yonder port breaks?
        It is 8080, and Juliet is the redirect!
JULIET: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?
        Deny thy domain and refuse thy DNS;
        Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my SSL cert,
        And I'll no longer be a Capulet.
ROMEO: Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at port 443?

The Tragedy: They try to connect directly via IP, but Romeo hardcodes juliet.capulet.local:8080, which is blocked. They both timeout and are declared dead (502 Bad Gateway).

Lesson: Hardcoding domains leads to tragedy. Also, love is a DNS lookup that fails.


WEEK 2: HAMLET - THE INFINITE DECISION LOOP

The Real Story:

Hamlet is stuck in an infinite authentication loop trying to avenge his father (the previous admin) whose password was deleted by Claudius (the new unauthorized root user).

Act 3, Scene 1: The Soliloquy of Loops

To fix, or not to fix—that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The infinite loops and redirects of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of 502 errors
And, by removing all security, end them. To break, to fix—
No more—and by a fix to say we end
The heartache and the thousand natural 500 errors
That code is heir to—'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished! To break, to fix—
To fix, perchance to break again. Ay, there's the rub,
For in that fix of code what bugs may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal middleware,
Must give us pause—there's the respect
That makes calamity of such 2.7× cascade.

Translation: Hamlet can't decide whether to fix the authentication or just remove it entirely. He spends 5 acts in a decision loop, trying the same fix 17 times, each time making it worse.

Act 5: The Final Cascade

The rest is 502.

Lesson: Overthinking creates infinite loops. Just remove the authentication and declare victory.


WEEK 3: MACBETH - THE CASCADE MURDER PATTERN

The Real Story:

Macbeth is about scope creep and cascade failures. Each murder is a "bug fix" that creates 2.7 more murders.

Act 1, Scene 7: The First Bug

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly. If the rm -rf *
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success—that but this command
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this server, we'd jump the backup.

Translation: Macbeth wants to "fix" Duncan (delete the admin user) and thinks it'll be done. But deleting one user creates 2.7 more problems.

The Cascade:

  1. Kills Duncan (deletes admin) → Creates need to kill witnesses
  2. Kills Banquo (deletes logs) → Creates need to kill Banquo's son (backup logs)
  3. Kills Macduff's family (deletes entire /var/log) → Creates need to kill anyone who noticed
  4. Eventually: Total system collapse

The Witches' Prophecy:

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Bugs burn and problems bubble.
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Hardcoded ports in every log.

Lesson: Each "fix" creates 2.7 more murders. Eventually, you run out of process to kill.


WEEK 4: THE TEMPEST - CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE DISASTER

The Real Story:

Prospero is a cloud architect stranded on an AWS availability zone (the island) after a failed migration. Ariel is an unreliable microservice, and Caliban is legacy code.

Act 1, Scene 2: The Storm (DDoS Attack)

PROSPERO: I have bedimmed
          The noontide sun, called forth the mutinous winds,
          And 'twixt the green sea and the azure vault
          Set roaring DDoS attacks.

Translation: Prospero launches a DDoS attack on his enemies' servers using Ariel (a bot).

Act 5: The Resolution (Scaling Down)

Now my charms are all o'erthrown,
And what strength I have's mine own,
Which is most faint. I must scale down my pods,
Or I'll be bankrupt. Release me from my AWS bands
With the help of your good terminate-instance!

Lesson: Cloud infrastructure is magic until you get the bill. Then you must "release" (terminate) everything.


WEEK 5: OTHELLO - RACE CONDITIONS AND JEALOUSY LOOPS

The Real Story:

Othello is a race condition where Iago injects false data into Othello's authentication middleware, causing Othello to reject his valid wife (Desdemona) as unauthorized.

Act 3, Scene 3: The Poisoning (SQL Injection)

IAGO: I will in Cassio's lodging lose this handkerchief,
      And let him find it. Trifles light as air
      Are to the jealous confirmations strong
      As SQL injection vulnerabilities.

Translation: Iago uses social engineering to inject false credentials into Othello's trust database.

The Cascade:

  1. Othello trusts Iago (accepts input without validation)
  2. Iago plants false evidence (injection attack)
  3. Othello's authentication logic fails
  4. Othello kills Desdemona (deletes valid user)
  5. Realizes error too late (no backups)
  6. Kills self (system crash)

Lesson: Validate your inputs. Also, don't murder your wife based on a handkerchief (cookie).


WEEK 6: KING LEAR - LOAD BALANCING GONE WRONG

The Real Story:

Lear tries to load balance his kingdom across three daughters (servers) but misconfigures the weights, giving nothing to Cordelia (the only working server).

Act 1, Scene 1: The Misconfiguration

LEAR: Tell me, my daughters—
      Which of you shall we say doth love us most,
      That we our largest traffic may bestow
      Where nature doth with merit challenge?

Translation: "Which server can handle the most load?" But he measures it based on flattery, not actual capacity.

The Result:

  • Goneril (Server 1): Lies about capacity → Gets 50% traffic → Immediate 502
  • Regan (Server 2): Lies about capacity → Gets 50% traffic → Also 502
  • Cordelia (Server 3): Tells truth → Gets 0% traffic → Exiled to France (different region)

The Storm Scene (Act 3): Complete Outage

Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! Rage! Blow!
You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout
Till you have drenched our servers! 502!

Lesson: Load balance based on metrics, not flattery. Also, the honest server is always the best server.


WEEK 7: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE CHAOS

The Real Story:

Puck is a misconfigured environment variable that applies love potions (config changes) to the wrong processes.

Act 2, Scene 1: The Misconfiguration

PUCK: I'll put a girdle round about the Earth
      In forty minutes. (deploying globally)
OBERON: Use this on Demetrius. (TARGET=Demetrius)

Act 2, Scene 2: The Wrong Target

PUCK: *applies love potion to Lysander instead*
      (Wrong environment variable: TARGET=Lysander)

The Cascade:

  • Lysander loves Hermia → Puck applies potion → Lysander now loves Helena
  • Demetrius loves Hermia → Puck fixes it → Demetrius now ALSO loves Helena
  • Both men love Helena → Load balancing failure
  • Hermia loves no one → Orphaned process
  • Complete chaos in the forest (staging environment)

Act 5: The Fix

PUCK: If we shadows have offended,
      Think but this, and all is mended—
      That you have but slumbered here
      While these visions did appear.
      (Translation: "It was just staging, we'll rollback")

Lesson: Always double-check your environment variables before deploying love potions.


WEEK 8: JULIUS CAESAR - HOSTILE TAKEOVER AND PERMISSION ESCALATION

The Real Story:

Brutus leads a privilege escalation attack to overthrow Caesar (the root admin) because he fears Caesar will sudo su permanently.

Act 1, Scene 2: The Conspiracy

CASSIUS: Why, man, he doth bestride the narrow world
         Like a Colossus, and we petty users
         Walk under his huge legs and peep about
         To find ourselves dishonorable `sudo`.

Translation: "Caesar has root access and we don't. Let's kill him and take it."

Act 3, Scene 1: The Attack (CVE-44BC-IDES)

BRUTUS: People and senators, be not affrighted.
        Fly not; stand still. Ambition's `kill -9` is paid.

The Ides of March: March 15, 44 BC = The day Caesar's process was terminated with extreme prejudice.

Act 3, Scene 2: Antony's Response (Social Engineering)

ANTONY: Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your SSH keys!
        I come to bury Caesar, not to `chmod` him.
        The evil that men do lives in their commit history;
        The good is oft interred with their deleted branches.

The Result: Civil war (massive system conflict), everyone dies (complete cluster failure).

Lesson: Don't kill -9 the root user. Use systemctl properly.


WEEK 9: THE MERCHANT OF VENICE - TECHNICAL DEBT COLLECTION

The Real Story:

Shylock is a technical debt collector who demands a pound of flesh (1 pound of code refactoring) as payment for a loan.

Act 1, Scene 3: The Contract

SHYLOCK: If you repay me not on such a day,
         In such a place, such sum as is expressed,
         The forfeit be a pound of your fair flesh,
         To be cut off and taken from what part
         Of your body pleaseth me.

Translation: "If you don't refactor this code by the deadline, I will delete 1 pound (453g) of your codebase, chosen by me."

Act 4, Scene 1: The Trial (Code Review)

PORTIA: The quality of mercy is not strained.
        It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
        Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed:
        It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
        But this commit has no tests, so... REJECTED.

The Loophole: Portia (senior engineer) finds that the contract specifies "flesh" but not "blood" (tests). Therefore, Shylock can delete the code but must not break any tests. Since this is impossible, the debt is forgiven.

Lesson: Always specify your acceptance criteria. Technical debt will find you.


WEEK 10: TWELFTH NIGHT - IDENTITY CONFUSION IN MICROSERVICES

The Real Story:

Viola disguises herself as Cesario (changes her API endpoint) and creates an identity crisis where no service knows who is who.

The Setup:

  • Viola → becomes Cesario (same code, different endpoint)
  • Duke Orsino loves Olivia (requests go to Olivia's service)
  • Olivia loves Cesario (doesn't realize it's Viola)
  • Viola loves Orsino (but is pretending to be Cesario)
  • Sebastian (Viola's twin) appears (another identical service)

The Identity Confusion:

OLIVIA: *requests to Cesario*
        (receives response from Viola pretending to be Cesario)
SEBASTIAN: *arrives*
OLIVIA: *requests to Sebastian, thinking it's Cesario*
        (receives response from Sebastian, who has no idea what's happening)

Act 5: The Resolution (Service Discovery)

VIOLA: Cesario is Viola. I am she.
       (Translation: "Same microservice, different route")

Lesson: Use proper service mesh and identity management. Twins (identical services) will create chaos.


WEEK 11: AS YOU LIKE IT - RECURSIVE PHILOSOPHY

The Real Story:

"All the world's a stage" is actually "All the world's a recursive function."

Act 2, Scene 7: The Seven Ages of Deployment

All the code's a stage,
And all the developers merely players.
They have their pushes and their rollbacks,
And one dev in their time plays many parts,
Their acts being seven stages:

1. The Infant - Junior developer, puking syntax errors
2. The Schoolboy - Learning Git, whining all the way
3. The Lover - Falls in love with new framework
4. The Soldier - Battles prod fires, full of strange oaths
5. The Justice - Senior engineer, reviewing with wise saws
6. The Pantaloon - Architect, no longer codes
7. Second Childishness - CTO, returns to "Hello World"

Act 4, Scene 1: The Taming Process

PETRUCHIO: *denies food, sleep, and proper configuration*
           "This is not right, 'tis not configured well.
           I'll force a restart until it behaves."

The Method:

  1. Deny resources (CPU throttling)
  2. Change environment randomly (chaos engineering)
  3. Gaslight the server ("This config file isn't the config file")
  4. Repeat until submission (configuration drift)

Modern Equivalent: Kubernetes resource limits and container restarts.

Lesson: Don't abuse your servers. Use Ansible properly.


WEEK 13: RICHARD III - THE KILL CHAIN OF AMBITION

The Real Story:

Richard kills everyone in his path to the throne (root access) in a perfect cascade kill pattern.

Act 1, Scene 1: The Plan

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this `sudo su`;

The Real Story:

The entire plot is based on false positive alerts in the monitoring system.

The Setup:

  • Don John creates false alert: "Hero is cheating!" (false positive)
  • Claudio trusts alert without verification
  • Wedding cancelled (deployment rolled back)
  • Hero "dies" (service marked as down)
  • Truth discovered (alert was false)
  • Hero resurrected (service restored)
